Michael Wilbon Biography and Wiki

Michael Wilbon (born November 19, 1958) is an ESPN commentator and former sportswriter and columnist for The Washington Post. He has been an analyst for ESPN and has co-hosted Pardon the Interruption on ESPN with former Post writer Tony Kornheiser since 2001.

He graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory School in 1976 and received his journalism degree in 1980 from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

After a summer internship at the newspaper in 1979 and 1980, Wilbon began working for the Washington Post in 1980. He covered college sports, the Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association before being promoted to full-time columnist in February 1980. His column in the Post, which dealt with the culture of sport as much as the action on the court.

Wilbon has covered ten Summer and Winter Olympic Games for The Washington Post in his career, every Super Bowl since 1987, almost every Final Four since 1982, and every year since 1987 the NBA Finals. He was also the only reporter outside Hawaii to cover the historic basketball upset of top-ranking Virginia by then-NAIA member Chaminade in 1982 (he was in Honolulu covering a college bowl game).

Wilbon earned a reputation during his time at the Post as one of “the best writer in American newspapers.” In 2001, the Society of Professional Journalists named Wilbon the top sports columnist. Wilbon has become known more like an ESPN personality in recent years than as a reporter. He wrote his last Washington Post column on December 7, 2010, and officially devoted full-time work to ESPN and ABC.

Wilbon started co-hosting ESPN’s daily opinion forum Pardon the Interruption (PTI) with Tony Kornheiser on October 22, 2001, after contributing to ESPN’s The Sports Reporters and other cable network shows. Wilbon was also a member of the NBA Countdown of ABC (hosted by Jalen Rose, Bill Simmons, and Magic Johnson), which was the pre-game show for the NBA telecasts of the network.

At the end of 2006, Wilbon agreed with ESPN to extend a multi-year contract. Wilbon offered to resign from the Post after accepting the contract, but chairman Don Graham of the newspaper and editor-in-chief Len Downie both asked him to stay on.

With respect to conflicts with his newspaper assignments, the network gained priority therein. The first major conflict took place on February 4, 2007, when instead of Super Bowl XLI, Wilbon covered a Detroit Pistons–Cleveland Cavaliers game.
