However, Richards rose to fame at a young age and certainly had an impressive career as a child star. Those who have been keeping up with the star's life know that she was involved in a sitcom titled American Woman, but what exactly happened to it?
Today, we're taking a look at how the show came to be as well as whether there is a future to it. From who the stars of American Woman are to what the show is about — keep on scrolling to find out!
8 Is 'American Woman' Based On A True Story?
In June 2015, it was announced that Kyle Richards is developing a television show together with TV Land. At the time, Richards was thrilled to announce the news:
"I am extremely excited and proud to be collaborating with such a talented and creative team of John Wells Productions, John Riggi, Warner Horizon Television and TV Land to bring this story to life."
In late 2017 it was revealed that the show was shifted from TV Land to Paramount Network.
7 'American Woman' Premiered On Paramount Network
The sitcom American Woman premiered in June 2018, and it follows a woman named Bonnie (whose character was loosely inspired by Richards' mother Kathleen Mary Richards), an unconventional mother who is struggling to raise her two daughters. The show received mixed reviews from critics, and it currently holds a 6.3 rating on IMDb.
6 'American Woman' Starred '90s Stars Alicia Silverstone And Mena Suvari
The cast of the show features Alicia Silverstone as Bonnie Nolan and Mena Suvari as Kathleen Callahan, the two main characters. The rest of the cast includes Jennifer Bartels, Makenna James, and Lia McHugh. Here's what Silverstone said about the show:
"When I went in expecting to meet someone named Kyle, I thought it was going to be a man. I kept looking around like, 'Where’s Kyle?' I had never seen her show! Those girls are going through their own struggles, and the three of them are like a family. They spend their time together shopping, drinking, sharing woes. I don’t see my friends as much — it’s impossible! What makes Bonnie such a badass is that she doesn’t even consider tomorrow — she has no job, no money, no skills, but she’s gonna figure it out."
5 Kelly Clarkson Was Behind The Theme Song Of 'American Woman'
The theme song for the sitcom is a cover of the hit "American Woman" by Canadian rock band The Guess Who. The cover is sung by popstar Kelly Clarkson who revealed she loved working on the project:
"I got to see the whole trailer for [American Woman] and the vibe of it, which I love, and I kind of got together with Jason Halbert, the producer of this song, and we wanted to create this moody kind of vibe and kind of pay homage to that ’70s classic sound of it, too. There are all these things that we love, and we felt we wanted to represent American Woman and the whole lyric of it — the strength and the boldness and the powerfulness I feel like American women exude."
4 'American Woman' Was Canceled
Unfortunately, the show inspired by Kyle Richards childhood wasn't a big success. After only one season, American Woman got canceled in September 2018. According to Deadline, the show's ratings declined throughout the season, and the finale was "down -71% from the premiere" in terms of viewership.
3 'American Woman' Caused Tension Between Kyle Richards And Her Sisters
Those who watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills already know that American Woman caused quite some trouble amongst Kyle Richards and her sisters. Here's what Kyle shared at the time:
"[My relationship with Kathy] is not great. I told her all the time, I said, 'I’m not sharing your stories or Kim's — these are my own stories.' And not only that, it’s a fictionalized version of our life, and our mom being a single mom in the ’70s is the jumping-off point."
However, the two sisters have made up since, and it seems as if Kathy Hilton ended up being accepting of the show.
2 'American Woman' Is A Love Letter To Kyle Richards's Mother
The reality television star revealed that American Woman is actually a love letter to her late mother Kathleen Richards:
"I like to write, but it's hard when you have four kids. But I would write sometimes when, you know, everyone was sleeping or whatever. When my mom passed away, I thought, 'I really wanna share who she was, because she really was a special and unique woman.' And it took my being a mom and an adult to have that extra appreciation for her. I always appreciated her, you know, but I had perspective as I got older. She's strict, and she could get, you know, a temper sometimes or whatever it was. But as an adult you're like well, yeah, hello, she was raising these kids on her own. She was stressed. She wanted the best for us, and you know, she was doing her best like we all are trying to do. And I just really wanted to share that story once I lost my mom as a, I guess, sort of love letter to her, too. And just inspire other women."
1 Will 'American Woman' Ever Get Another Season?
While American Woman got canceled after only one season, Kyle Richards was still very proud of the project. The reality television star who was the executive producer of the show also revealed that she hopes American Woman find a new home. Here what Richards wrote on Instagram:
"Thank you so much for watching [American Woman] and for all your support. All of you have been so supportive and cheered me on, and I am so appreciative[.] I’m so proud of the show we made and am so grateful for the talented team of people it took to create it. We put our hearts & souls into it. So many of you have expressed your love for the show. Maybe we will find it a new home ..."
